Wedding Tip Wednesday

Did you know the famous saying, "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" comes from an Old English rhyme?  The long-lived tradition we are all familiar with derives from four trinkets that a bride carries with her down the aisle.  Brides have stayed true to this trend without knowing the significance of its meaning.  For many, these embellishments are tokens of good luck and love, but the meaning is much deeper than that.  

Something old, like the brooch your grandmother gave you, represents continuity in order to keep the link between her family and the past; something new, offers optimism and good fortune for your future; something borrowed, is representative of the bride being loaned marital happiness to carry into her own marriage; something blue, like the date in blue stitching on your wedding gown, stands for love, purity, and faithfulness.  

(FUN FACT)  In the rhyme was an additional "A Sixpence in Your Shoe", which offered good fortune and prosperity.  What started in the Victorian Era and remains mainly a British custom, the sixpence was a British coin in the bottom of the bride's shoe for future financial security.  Do I hear...shopping spree?  Unfortunately, this custom was dropped when the rhyme made its way to America, due to lack of the coin (equal to six pennies).  But still, to this day, the rhyme continues to hold a sentimental value to brides and remains well-known to all.

• Tossed salad with assorted dressings, coleslaw, bow-tie pasta, grilled chicken and pesto salad, peel and eat shrimp cocktail, sliced seasonal fruit, steamed clams, steamed mussels, spicy fried chicken, Boston baked beans, corn on the cob, cheddar mashed potatoes, steamed lobster with drawn butter and “Sweets in the Sand” package.

Wedding Tip Wednesday!

 Here at The Waterfront Beach Resort, A Hilton Hotel we always recommend putting together a complete list of vendors and a timeline of events a month before your wedding.  A timeline makes the day go smoothly and helps keep every vendor on the same page.  (It also helps if vendors need to communicate with one another before your wedding)

A few items on your timeline can be: 

• Names, arrival times, and day of contact numbers of vendors
• Hair and make-up times
• Estimated time for the couple, bridal party, and family to all be ready
• Time for your photographer to show up (in case you want pre-wedding photos)
• First-look (if you choose to have a first look)
• Ceremony arrival time, start time, and the approximate time length it will be
• Time between Ceremony and Reception
• Cocktail Hour start time and Photos!  (A great way to save time taking photos is to do group photos and bridal party photos prior to the wedding.  If you are saving your first look for the ceremony, try to get the family and bridal photos done for each side so then you can just add the couple during cocktail hour.  Make sure you notify your family and friends that are in pictures ahead of  time.) 
• Entrance to the reception, along with the first dance
• Toasts
• Serve time for food
• Dancing
• Cake Cutting
